Every engine has its advantages and disadvantages. some engines might provide a better physic
experience than others but has poor optimization, or some might provide photo-realistic graphics
but with poor physics.
So game makers usually have to choose between engines, to see which one can provide the most
support for the game they are currently developing.
As for a major breakthrough in 3d graphics, check out Cry engine 3 video on this forum. In my opinion,
I think it looks amazing, even Cry engine 1 still looks amazing and that was from back in 2004 when
Farcry 1 used it.
